Cross hole sonic logging (CSL) is a method to verify the structural integrity of concrete cast-in-situ piles. The test is performed once the pile concrete has gained adequate strength and involves transmitting and receiving acoustical waves through 50mm dia steel access tubes placed in the steel cage at the time of fabrication of the rebar cage.
In order that the CSL test be performed successfully, it should be ensured that the access tubes are joined properly during assembly and lapping of the cages so that grout at the time of concreting does not find its way into the CSL tubes and clog these thereby preventing passage of the acoustical wave transmitters and receivers down through the tubes when the CSL testing is conducted. Furthermore, when a pile rebar cage containing CSL tubes is lifted for placement into a pile borehole, care must be taken to ensure that the bending of the CSL tubes is kept to a minimum so that the tube joints do not come off due to excessive bending. For this purpose, either a lifting table should be employed or the individual cages should be made of reasonable lengths.
When two or more rebar cages are lapped together during the cage lowering operation into the pile borehole, the process of joining together the CSL tubes should be safe and quick and should result in a reliable joint that precludes the possibility of ingress of grout during the subsequent concreting operation.
We manufacture and supply lightweight CSL tubes that can be speedily press-fit together to produce a firm watertight joint which can take a reasonable amount of bending and twisting during cage lifting and lowering. Joining of these tubes during the cage lapping is also a fairly simple and speedy process and is described below.
